Disktective can be used to inspect the real size and distribution of used space on disks and in directories.
The Disktective program consists of four tabs:
the Main tab
the Report tab
the Manual tab
the About tab.
Each tab has its own functions as explained below.
The Disktective 'Main' tab.
This tab has the functions for starting, stopping, selecting and setting options.
To select a directory to inspect, double-click on a directory in the directories-box.
To select a disk, first use the drive-box, after that double-click on the root-directory in the directories box.
You can tell which directory is selected by looking at the 'selected directory' bar.
To start processing press the 'Start' button. The 'Abort' button can abort the processing. You can also do this using the 'process' menu item at the top.
When the 'Add to report' checkbox is checked, distribution information is added to the report (on tab 2). A report contains complete directory and size-distribution information. In this program reports are represented as trees (see also below, the paragraph 'the Report tab').
If you want to include Date/Time information in the report-tree, enable the 'Include Date and Time' checkbox.
If you want to include the disk free space, enable the 'Include Disk free space' checkbox. Disk free space will only be included in the report if you examine a root-directory.

Creating a report is done by pressing the 'Start'-button in the 'Main' tab while the 'add to report' checkbox activated.
The 'Report' tab can show reports about disks and directories generated by this program. Report-tree items can be expanded by clicking the '+' or collapsed by clicking the '-' next to the corresponding item.
Reports can be loaded from disk and saved.
Speed considerations.
Generating reports usually is reasonably fast. However, the more data there is in the report field, the slower the process of adding new entries to it. So it is advisable to use the menu option 'file/new' once in a while to clean up the report field.
SAVING AND LOADING REPORTS IN THE CURRENT VERSION IS A VERY SLOW PROCESS. It might take minutes if your report is very large. In future versions this problem will be addressed.
